Green Throttle Visits Pixar

A guest post from Executive Producer, Jason Woodward

A few of us in the office were lucky enough to have a tour of the Pixar studio in Emeryville on Tuesday. I’m sure that the daily routine of working there makes the atmosphere fade to a certain extent but I can’t get over how well set up the space was for creative people to do creative work and how much that work was celebrated.

The art on the walls showed me that the fiction and background behind the game or movie or maybe any creative endeavor is just as important as the final product.

“You’re a Backer”

There is no denying that video game projects on Kickstarter have resulted in some of the most interesting stories to come out of the crowdfunding platform since it launched just a few years back. We’ve seen it all, from record setting projects to unexpected cancellations to disappearing acts by project leads. There just seems to be something about the platform that clicks when it comes to video games. Maybe it’s because of the unwavering support that gamers will show the creators and franchises that they adore. Maybe it’s because the larger publishers are less willing take risks on unproven concepts these days. Whatever it may be, when you look at the top ten most successful projects (in terms of total dollars pledged) video games dominate the list with a mix of hardware projects, game sequels/revivals and all-new games from tried and true developers.

What is a console experience?

The age of portable consoles is upon us. Mobile devices are getting more powerful with each iteration and today’s smartphones and tablets are routinely able to deliver experiences previously reserved for much larger, more expensive devices. Gaming is no exception to this new era. When it comes to playing a game on your living room television with a group of friends, a pricey console with an 8 year life cycle is no longer your only viable option. Odds are you already have a phone or tablet that can provide what we like to call the “console experience”.

App Discovery

App Discovery

The last few weeks have been pretty rough for a few of the app discovery platforms and curation services. In light of the recent news surrounding many of the heavy hitters in this space, I started thinking about app discovery and how people discover games, specifically. This is an important consideration for Green Throttle, after all, since we regard this to be one of the core strengths of Arena. We provide the ability for developers to rise about the noise of overcrowded app stores while giving players the means to painlessly locate the games compatible with their Atlas controllers. So, how do you find mobile games? Think back to the last three that you installed. Do you remember how you discovered them?

GDC Afterthoughts

We’ve all been to GDC at some point over the years, attending the conference as employees of whichever companies we were with at the time whether it be RedOctane, Activision, EA, etc. It’s 2013, though, that marks the first year that we all attended together as Green Throttle. It was a busy week filled with meetings, panels and parties. Here are a few events that especially stood out for us.

On Monday night, we co-sponsored the Pocket Gamer Party along with Native X, Nokia, and Appoday over at the nightclub Roe.

Charles Huang is the chief executive of Green Throttle Games. He also co-founded Red Octane, creator of Guitar Hero.

Smart phones, tablets, and smart TVs will soon be powered by the same technology stack -- ARM processors running iOS or Android along with their respective app stores. That means the key differentiating feature between these devices will be staring you right in the face -- screen size.

Where Have All the Hard Games Gone?

Street Fighter (specifically II and 3rd Strike on PS2) has recently resurfaced in our office and prompted a multi-week series of competitive matches with relentless taunting. Playing SF has made me realize how hard games were back in that era and how much level balancing hardly exists on social and mobile games.
